Beto political committee mocks 'big announcement'

While the announcement remains cryptic, the obvious assumption is that O’Rourke will announce a 2022 challenge to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

In the same survey conducted on registered Texas voters, Abbott’s approval rating has increased since August but still sits at 43%. While O’Rourke is popular among Democrats, he holds a negative image among Independents, with only 22% of them having a positive view of him.

In a hypothetical poll conducted by University of Texas and Texas Tribune, Gov. Abbott had a nine-percentage point lead over potential Democratic challenger Beto O’ Rourke, leading 46% to 37%.

In addition to running for president in the 2020 election, O’Rourke narrowly lost his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018.

Speculation has also been rampant that actor and Austin resident Matthew McConaughey will throw his hat in the ring as well. While McConaughey has made some vague statements about being interested in Texas’ highest office, he has not made an announcement and doesn’t even have party affiliation.
