The series, hosted by musician Natalie Bassingthwaighte (pictured), follows individuals, each with their own experiences with mental health issues, as they take part in an experiment to test whether creating and participating in art can be part of a healing process. The impact will be measured by Australia’s Black Dog Institute.
Space 22 is an original BBC Studios ANZ production for the ABC. Executive producers are Kylie Washington, Anita Jorgensen and Ariel White; series producer is Bev Shroot. The series is distributed by BBC Studios. ABC’s factual manager is Julie Hanna and head of factual and culture is Jennifer Collins.
The six-part documentary series was created and produced by BBC Studios’ Australian production arm, and it will also be available to the global market under the title Art On The Brain.
“I’m excited to be bringing our first original format to life for the ABC,” said Kylie Washington, general manager and creative director, production at BBC Studios ANZ in a release. “Each year one in five Australians experience mental illness but roughly 60% do not seek help. Space 22 explores what happens to our brains, bodies and emotions when we make art and what science reveals about the impact of colors, textures and sensory experiences on our mental health.”
