The state-of-the-art office building features a roof with solar panels and a clearstory to allow for natural lighting. In addition, the site incorporates two electric car charging stations in the parking lot. Integrating green energy allows the Authority to take a more socially conscious and socially responsible approach to its administrative operations.
The new office building improves synergy between the Authority’s plant management, operations team and administrative support as all staff are at one location and will not have to travel for meetings or to complete assignments.
While the Authority has been in operation for more than 50 years, it formally separated as a component unit of the Township in 2014. Afterward, the Authority had rented office space in Whitemarsh Township for its administrative office. The Authority finished its lease June 30 upon completion of the new office, which is located at 2015 Joshua Road in Lafayette Hill. The site is also home to the Authority’s wastewater treatment plant.
The goal has always been for the Authority to have its own space, Chairman Timothy Ferris said.
Whitemarsh Township Authority Director of Finance Kyle Detweiler said the Authority anticipates an immediate cost savings on its utility bills because of the renewable energy additions and energy efficiency measures.
Matthew Price of Period Architecture served as the project’s design architect. McCarthy Construction Inc. served as the general contractor. The Delaware County commercial contracting company typically undertakes interior work, including classroom renovations at Springfield School District and upgrades to a 40,000 square-foot administrative building for the West Chester Area School District. Pat McCarthy said he and his father, Chris, who founded the company in 1982, opted to bid on the Authority’s building project because it offered “something different” and “something a little bigger.”
The building project cost $2 million and was funded exclusively from the Authority’s capital reserve. The Authority’s more than 6,000 residential and commercial customers in Whitemarsh Township, Springfield, Plymouth Township, Whitpain Township, Ambler and Conshohocken will not see a rate increase because of the new administrative office. Two full-time administrative employees will work out of the new location, which is expected to serve the Authority and its customers for the next 50 to 100 years.
